The Historic Douro Wine Region

Wines have been produced in the Alto Douro Vinhateiro for over 2,000 years.
This region is home to the RDD - Região Demarcada do Douro (Douro Demarcated Region), the oldest in the world, officially delimited in 1756.
The RDD is divided into three sub-regions: Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo and Douro Superior - each characterised by unique soil, altitude and climate features.

Our Grapes and their Terroir
Telheiro Santos wines and sparkling wines are produced in the sub-region of the Douro Wine Region called Cima Corgo.
The location of this sub-region, in the central valley, provides a fairly balanced climate with a Mediterranean profile.
Mild winters and hot summers at an ideal altitude. The schist soil gives the wines a slightly alkaline profile, beneficial for premium wines. Being naturally acidic, schist retains plenty of water thanks to the presence of lamina fragments, allowing the vines to withstand the arid summer conditions.
The terroir of this region is not defined solely by its contours: it is alive, and thus produces a distinctive variety of wines.
The grapes from this region give rise to well-structured wines, with a rustic and earthy flavor. These are more concentrated, elegant, and opulent wines, with greater aging potential.

He has always known the Douro grapes and their winegrowers and is also the face behind Douro Ansiães.
